Thettekkad is one destination famous for its bird sanctuary. The bird sanctuary is located between the branches of the longest river in Kerala – The periyar. The area is of evergreen low land forest and is considered to be the richest bird habitat in India – There are almost more than 275 different species of birds, including all the endemics. Mottled Wood Owl, Sri Lanka Frogmouth, Rusty-tailed Flycatcher, Grey-headed Bulbul, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon are some of the rare species found here. The sanctuary is just 60 Kilometers from Ernakulam city adn 45 Kilometers from Cochin International airport, if coming by train, Aluva is the nearest railway station.
Close to Samil Ali bird sanctuary is the brid watching and camping eco lodge called The hornbill. Set on the banks of the pristine river periyar. The Camp Offers Luxury cottage tents, the word “Luxury” is in terms of camping facility. The cottages have twin beds and has an attached bathroom. The accommodation comes with all meals, which would be a local Kerala cuisine, variety of activities like river kayaking, bird watching, village tours and cycling
The activities include – river kayaking in the river Periyar, cycling, bird watching – Guided bird watching tour would be charged seperatly and will cost Rs 1500.

Bathing the elephants at Kodanad elephant rescue center
Kodanad – A elephant rescue center is just 40 minutes drive from Thattekkad. The Elephant zoo is also on the banks of the river Periyar. The Rescue center offers activities with the Elephant like bathing the elephants, Feeding them, a short safari on top of them, and this is one place where you could see the training of the naughty Elephants.
If you are a nature lover and has a passion for camping activities - Then the horn bill is your ultimate place to be in. There are 8 cottages and is an ideal location for groups and corporate team outings.
